ko-
dansu
, this tansu chest was made of paulownia
kiri
wood face with cryptomeria case and interiors and used over 180 years ago in the late Edo Era (c. 1840). The
ko
-dansu
was a special chest used to store one's personal accessories as well as money, documents and other valuables.  There are eight drawers.   Four of them have locks as well as the money safe door.  One key works on all the locks.  Additionally a latch below the locking button holds the safe door in place when not locked (see picture 10).   There are two drawers behind the lower right hand safe (see picture 8).
This tansu chest is made of solid
sugi
(cryptomeria) wood with kiri face and has pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction (see picture 11).  All the hardware is hand forged iron.
This chest has a century plus old original
warm aged patina
and, having been used lovingly over the centuries, it remains in
fine original antique condition
and should serve one well for another century of use.   It measures 30" wide by 25" high by 13" deep (79 x 64 x 33 cm).  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
very solid and functional
piece of furniture.
