ANTIQUE JAPANESE 3 DRAWER SUGI WOOD (CRYPTOMERIA) CHOBA TANSU CHEST LOCK & KEY

Known as a
choba-dansu
(document tansu chest), this tansu chest is made of solid Japanese cryptomeria
sugi
wood and used over 120 years ago in the late Meiji Era (c. 1890) . The
chobadansu
was a special chest used to store money, documents and other valuables.  There is one top locking drawer which is still operable with the use of the key provided (see picture 8).
This tansu chest is made of solid
sugi
(cryptomeria) wood with pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint
construction (see picture 11).  All the hardware is hand tooled copper.  This chest has its original kijiro lacquer finish over persimmon tannin stain along with its 13o year old
deep rich patina
.
All drawers  move easily without binding, and it comes complete with key used to lock the operable locking drawer (see picture 8).
This chest has a century plus old original
warm aged patina
and, having been used lovingly over the centuries,  it remains in
fine original antique condition
and should serve one well for another century of use.
It measures 8 1/4" wide by 10" high by 14" deep (21 x 25 x 36 cm).  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
very solid and functional
piece of furniture.
